Tutorial to solve Marathon - Nurikabe

First of all, thank you to all for your feedback and support. It will surely help in future creations. As now the marathon is over, i would like to discuss the tricks behind the solution. The final puzzle selected for Marathon was 2nd version of what i created first. The first version was very tough and so had to modify it. I will upload that version soon after it's tested. But for right now let's move on to the solving steps. Apologies for any grammatical mistakes or bad image quality. But i have tried to keep it simple and good as far as i can.

Sudoku Mahabharat Episode 7 by Logic Masters India (LMI)

Finally a long awaited moment for me, where I am the author for this round. This is the last episode of long going Sudoku Mahabharat started in September-2014. So pull up your sleeves and get ready for one last battle to make your place into offline finals which will be held on 10th May 2015 in Bangalore. For more details on Sudoku Mahabharat click here.

Although you can go out in the internet world and get as many Sudokus as you can but i am also sharing some of the links for your practice. Also sharing some of the tricks to tackle some of types appearing in this test.

Added some new tricks on 19th march 2015 (it's in red color)

Tips and Tricks: 

1) The foremost and biggest tip is don't forget what is the name of this round. Pun not intended.

2) Average Sudoku - Remember since it's average and only integers are allowed, numbers on both side of line will be of same type. i.e. Either both numbers will be even or both will be odd. Also observe 1 and 9 can never be on the lines (1 and 6 for 6x6). 

3) Kropki Sudoku - Black dot only possible pairs are 1-2,2-4,4-8,3-6. White dot pairs are 1-2,2-3,3-4,4-5,5-6,6-7,7-8,8-9. If you have series of 2 black dots then only possible sets are 1-2-4 and 2-4-8. And the only 3 consecutive black dot series is 1-2-4-8. Remember order of these sets can be either way. Also 1-2 can contain either dot (just a reminder). Do not restrict to this as for e.g. if dots series are in L shaped then it can have repeated digits as well like 4-2-4 etc. If you have 4 black dots in the 3*3 box entirely, or in a row or in a column then remaining 3 cells (that do not share dot) will contain digits 5,7,9.

3) Consecutive - Try to look out for big series.

4) XV - V pairs are 3-2,1-4. X pairs are 6-4,7-3,8-2,9-1. Clearly 5 doesn't fit in any of these so now you know what to watch out for.

Sudoku Mahabharat by Logic Masters India (LMI)

LMI is conducting the first 'Sudoku Mahabharat' from Sep-2014 to May-2015. 

This is a national contest aimed at encouraging the best sudoku solvers of India to participate and experience the excitement, thrill and puzzling atmosphere on the lines of various national championships and the World Championships.

Even International Players Can participate but they will not be eligible for Offline Finals.

RESULTS

The Indian Puzzle Championship 2013 has a new winner, Prasanna Seshadri, with an impressive total of 977.5 points. This gave Prasanna a 250 point lead over second placed Amit Sowani who secured 720 points. Rajesh Kumar, the veteran solver, returned to the team after a one year absence with an impressive 610. Rohan Rao, the three-year champion, gave a lackluster performance by his high standards, but did enough to be the 4th entrant into Team India with 584 points. 

Unfortunately again i missed it by one position. The selection was of top 4 and i came 5th for 2nd consecutive time.

My Experience :

Thanks to all authors for such wonderful puzzles, they were really more tricky rather than hard. 

It took me two days to consume my result. But anyways i was happy thinking there would be some year made for me :). Well regarding puzzle types, 

A1 - I felt this was good for beginners. Except that odd man out created confusion to some of them.

A2- Slitherlink was fine with logic that we either need to eliminate options or solve and match it. But for sudoku i thought borders of regions must have been present because its just mechanical to redraw       it on each grid and nothing logical think about it. Though few of them can imagine the border and           eliminate the options. So at the same time giving borders would reduce mechanical work and if             required points could have been reduced and allotted to some other type.

B1, B2 - They were little tricky and easy but for beginners seeing the huge size grids must have surely   created problem. 

C1, C2 - i personally don't like battleships. c1 was nice and c2 i haven't solved yet.

D1 and D2 - Both star battles were nice and i guess practice puzzles had similar types so most of           people must have attempted this.

E1 Sudoku - i felt it was little difficult for beginners to attempt with fewer clues.

E2 Skyscraper Sudoku - The size was smaller one which made it easy to solve, but at the same time     worth 30 points.

F1 and F2 - Black White Loop and Black White Grey Loop were one of my favorite, so i solved it first and quickly to boost my confidence.

G1 and G2 - I felt it could have been little easier one. As we already had G2 to think of. But i skipped G types during test and was later regretting why i didn't attempted 

H1, H2 - I am good at searching but did a error while solving which costed me to loose points :(.

I1, I2 - It was strange i was not able to solve regular Tapa but solved the Variant easily.

J1, J2 - They were really awesome to solve and quite a new type to me but interesting.

K1, K2 - They were really my favorites. But was not able to solve during tests. They were real real         tricky in terms of logic.

L1, L2 - I was stuck in Snake Eggs, later realized i unnecessarily wasted some time there.

M1 - Well i want highlight upon this one. I was surprised looking at this kind of Slitherlink. I feel the lines could have been much darker. It was so light in my print outs that once used eraser the lines get erased and then i had to take print outs again and again. So if those lines would have been darker then it would have been helpful. But it was tricky and good one to solve.

M2 - It was real worth for its points in terms of quality and difficulty.

My favourites were - crosslink, BWG loop, tapa difference. Kakuro + pento kakuro were also awesome (solved it later) 

Overall i really enjoyed the puzzles and quality were good. I felt it could have been balanced such that more easy puzzles and few with much difficulty so that for beginner it could have been more enjoyable and also for top solvers to compete in their zone.
