Tutorial to solve Marathon - Nurikabe

First of all, thank you to all for your feedback and support. It will surely help in future creations. As now the marathon is over, i would like to discuss the tricks behind the solution. The final puzzle selected for Marathon was 2nd version of what i created first. The first version was very tough and so had to modify it. I will upload that version soon after it's tested. But for right now let's move on to the solving steps. Apologies for any grammatical mistakes or bad image quality. But i have tried to keep it simple and good as far as i can.

Finally a long awaited moment for me, where I am the author for this round. This is the last episode of long going Sudoku Mahabharat started in September-2014. So pull up your sleeves and get ready for one last battle to make your place into offline finals which will be held on 10th May 2015 in Bangalore. For more details on Sudoku Mahabharat click here.

Although you can go out in the internet world and get as many Sudokus as you can but i am also sharing some of the links for your practice. Also sharing some of the tricks to tackle some of types appearing in this test.

Added some new tricks on 19th march 2015 (it's in red color)

Tips and Tricks: 

1) The foremost and biggest tip is don't forget what is the name of this round. Pun not intended.

2) Average Sudoku - Remember since it's average and only integers are allowed, numbers on both side of line will be of same type. i.e. Either both numbers will be even or both will be odd. Also observe 1 and 9 can never be on the lines (1 and 6 for 6x6). 

3) Kropki Sudoku - Black dot only possible pairs are 1-2,2-4,4-8,3-6. White dot pairs are 1-2,2-3,3-4,4-5,5-6,6-7,7-8,8-9. If you have series of 2 black dots then only possible sets are 1-2-4 and 2-4-8. And the only 3 consecutive black dot series is 1-2-4-8. Remember order of these sets can be either way. Also 1-2 can contain either dot (just a reminder). Do not restrict to this as for e.g. if dots series are in L shaped then it can have repeated digits as well like 4-2-4 etc. If you have 4 black dots in the 3*3 box entirely, or in a row or in a column then remaining 3 cells (that do not share dot) will contain digits 5,7,9.

3) Consecutive - Try to look out for big series.

4) XV - V pairs are 3-2,1-4. X pairs are 6-4,7-3,8-2,9-1. Clearly 5 doesn't fit in any of these so now you know what to watch out for.

Sudoku Mahabharat by Logic Masters India (LMI)

LMI is conducting the first 'Sudoku Mahabharat' from Sep-2014 to May-2015. 

This is a national contest aimed at encouraging the best sudoku solvers of India to participate and experience the excitement, thrill and puzzling atmosphere on the lines of various national championships and the World Championships.

Even International Players Can participate but they will not be eligible for Offline Finals.

Well Indian Puzzle Championship 2013 is over. I will tell my experience soon. But quickly i again missed this year to make up in top 4. I came 5th in India. This is 3rd consecutive time i am missing it :(. But moving forward, may be some year is there for me in future. :)

It will be hosted by LOGIC MASTERS INDIA. It will be held online on 10th August,2013. The winner of this will be declared official Indian Sudoku Champion 2013. 

Do not confuse this with Times Sudoku Championship. The top 4 of Times Sudoku Championship will represent India at World Sudoku Championship to be held in China in October,2013 and the funds will be sponsored by Times.

Whereas the top 4 of Indian Sudoku Championship can also opt for representing India at World Sudoku Championship, in an individual capacity (Self Sponsored), unless they merge with winners of TSC. :)

Its been long time since i haven't published anything. Lot of things have happened since my last post. Firstly few LOGICMASTERSINDIA weekend tests got over. I have not yet shared my experience of this year's INDIAN PUZZLE  CHAMPIONSHIP and INDIAN SUDOKU CHAMPIONSHIP which was taken under by Times of India to organize and sponsor to the winners to represent INDIA at World Championship. Also after that to attract more Indians into this LMI started with SUDOKU BEGINNERS' CONTEST. Details of all these things will be put up shortly as and when i find time.

First of all regrets for being away for so many days without any news.

Had to go to Andhra Pradesh suddenly. Now i am back so will be posting the puzzles regularly.

Also this weekend the puzzle test : SEVEN SAMURAIS (16-18th june 2012) is coming. Further Details will be posted soon. Also i have to share my experience of IPC 2012 that will also be posted soon along with the puzzle. Till then have a good night. :)

As my final 3rd year exams have started, I would not be able to post the puzzles.
